What Do These Land Rover Warning Lights Mean?

In this blog, we break down the most commonly displayed Land Rover warning lights, explaining their meaning, potential causes, and recommended actions.

Owning a Land Rover is a luxurious experience, but it comes with its own set of unique challenges. One of the most common anxieties for Land Rover drivers is the sudden appearance of cryptic warning lights on the dashboard. These illuminated symbols can range from mild annoyances to urgent red flags, leaving drivers baffled and unsure of how to proceed.

But don’t worry fellow Land Rover enthusiasts! This blog post is your one-stop guide to deciphering the language of your car’s warning lights. Let’s dive right in.

Land Rover Engine Malfunction Warning Light

The engine malfunction warning light is the most common, and it can indicate a wide range of issues, from minor sensor malfunctions to major engine problems.

Potential Causes: Faulty spark plugs, oxygen sensor issues, clogged catalytic converter, vacuum leaks, etc.

Recommended Action: Don’t panic! While the Check Engine Light might seem ominous, it’s often a sign of a relatively minor issue that can be easily diagnosed and repaired. Schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible to have your car’s diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) read and the problem addressed.

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Warning Light

A very serious one that should never be ignored is your ABS warning light. The ABS warning light is indicating a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), which could affect your ability to brake safely in an emergency.

Potential Causes: Faulty wheel speed sensors, malfunctioning ABS pump, low brake fluid level, etc.

Recommended Action: Take this warning seriously! Driving with a faulty ABS is dangerous. Stop driving immediately and have your car towed to us or your nearest qualified Land Rover mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

Land Rover Oil Pressure Warning Light

This light indicates that your engine is overheating, which can lead to serious damage if not addressed quickly. More often than not, it could just be that your car engine coolant has dropped below the recommended level and will simply need topping up or replaced. But it could also mean something more sinister.

Potential Causes: Low coolant level, faulty thermostat, blocked radiator, etc.

Recommended Action: Pull over to a safe location and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down for at least 30 minutes before checking the coolant level. If the coolant level is low, add coolant carefully (consult your owner’s manual for the correct type and mixture). If the light remains on, book in with us and get a diagnostic check on your Land Rover.

DPF Exhaust Filter Warning Light

Modern Land Rover diesel vehicles (ones made in 2019 onwards) will have been built with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), so this warning light applies to all diesel car owners with a make and model 2019 and newer.

Your diesel particulate filter captures and stores exhaust soot which helps to reduce harmful emissions from your car. As with all filters, the DPF has finite capacity and over time it becomes blocked which leads to serious issues for your car.

A clogged DPF filter can cause increased emissions, reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption and damage to the engine. As well as a failed MOT.

It is illegal to remove your DPF, doing so can result in a fine, and an invalid insurance policy.
